August 7-10 Tuesday thru Friday

Tuesday August 7
We started out with a group picture taken at 7:30am.  We also had a couple picture taken.  See them below.

Couple Picture - Elder & Sister Tolman

Here is a picture of Lynne and me with President and Sister Fenn our mission president and his wife.

We had training in the morning followed by lunch that Lynne fixed for us.  We have some nice insulated lunch bags that we use that are labeled "FamilySearch.org/Mission"  We keep getting asked where we got them and we tell them at our assignment at the Mesa FamilySearch Library. We have an hour for lunch and eat outside in a shaded area with tables and chairs between the Joseph Smith Memorial building and Temple Square.  The only problem is we have to be careful not to attract the bees which keep wanting to share our food.

We had some training videos about the thirteen different zones in the mission zones after lunch.  We will be serving in one of these zones.  We visited the Church History Library which was very interesting.  We watched several presentations about stories from church history.  One was about Joseph Millett who helped a father feed his family as he had run out of food.  The father had prayed about who would be able to help him by providing flour.  His prayer was answered that he should go see Joseph Millett.  You can watch this at Joseph Millett Story

We returned to the apartment and then went to the 5pm Endowment session at the Salt Lake Temple.  We really enjoyed being in the Salt Lake Temple.  That is where we were married almost 47 years ago. Here are a couple of pictures of the temple.

Wednesday August 8
We had a full day of training with sessions in the morning and the afternoon.  We are familiar with most of the training material but still are leaning and it is good to review the material.

Here was our schedule for the day
7:30-8:00am - Training Zone Devotional which consisted of short inspirational videos on family history, opening song, spiritual thought and scripture and prayer
8-11:30am   – Training with a break at 9:30am
11:30-12:30 – Lunch
12:30-3:30   – Training

This was the first day that we had a full day of training.  Most of the time we have a tour or other items for part of the day.  After our training we went food shopping to two stores.  We attended a presentation about possible opportunities to serve outside of our regular assignment.  This may be something that we will do once we find out what our assignment will be.

Reviewing training module with a Family Search Missionary
to make sure I understand the material

Thursday August 9
We had a half day of training.  Lynne completed and passed off the final training module.  I also finished but still need to complete the review.  We have had 9 training modules.  Once we go over and review each module we need to sit down with a missionary and they make sure that we understand what we were supposed to learn.  Our last module was on Memories so Sister Tolman did that quicker than I did.  I added a brief story and picture about our MTC experience and shared this on facebook.

This afternoon we went to the Family History Center and had a tour of all five floors.  We ended up helping several individuals even though we don’t yet have a specific assignment.

After dinner, we discussed where we might serve on our mission.  With our backgrounds we could serve either in training the new incoming and outgoing missionaries or in several different areas in the Family History Library.  We will meet with the mission presidency on Monday and discuss this with them.  We will serve where ever they need us the most.

Friday August 10
We had a half day of training today.  I passed off the final training module.  For the rest of the morning I have been working on some minor clean-up work on my 5 generations on FamilyTree.  I showed several of the trainers my family history blog gktfamilyhistorylessons.blogspot.com and they were happy to be able to access the material that I have posted there.

Picture with Sister Tolman who is my 2nd Cousin.  Our ancestor
in common is Jaren Tolman

I have put some pictures and documents on Aunt Helene’s page on FamilyTree.  I scanned in a picture of her with our parents in Riverside California.  I also posted a copy of her funeral program.
Sister Tolman has been fixing lunches for us this week except for Monday so today she had a break today as we ate lunch at the cafeteria in the church office building.  We had shrimp and a macaroni salad.

We saw two presentations this afternoon.  One was about the Church History Library and another about the group that works on correcting problems.   I have several slides from my mission in Tahiti that they are interesting receiving.  These have President Howard W Hunter and his wife in them.  They were taken in 1969 in Uturoa, Raiatea.  The week before we left for our mission, I scanned all of my Tahiti slides and I have them on my laptop.

I wrote a first pass at a life sketch and posted in on Family Tree but only I can see it.  So I will share what I wrote.
“Glen Kerr Tolman was born on October 4, 1946 four years to the day after his oldest sister Glenna.  With three similar names in the family (Glen H Tolman, Glen K Tolman, and Glenna Tolman) there was often confusion about who was being called.  Glen was just 13 months older than his brother Byron.  Most of the time they were great friends but the competition between them sometimes led to arguments.  They enjoyed participating together in various sports including softball, basketball, bowling, and fishing.

Glen lived in the same home until September 1971 except for the 30 months when he served a full-time mission in French Polynesia.  Schools were close with elementary (Emerson), junior high (Roosevelt), and senior high (East) within walking distance.

Church was very important as the family attended the Garden Park Ward which was within walking distance.

Glen married Lynne Senior in 1971 in the Salt Lake Temple.  They spent two years in Salt Lake City while Glen completed his Masters Degree in Mathematics at the University of Utah.  They lived in Berkley Michigan (8 years) and then moved to Tempe Arizona.  They are the parents of eight daughters all of whom graduated from McClintock High School and Arizona State University.
Employment included 8 years with Ford Tractor Operations in Troy Michigan and 23 years with Motorola in Phoenix.  Glen retired in February of 2005.  He worked part-time as a sports official from 2007 to 2017 officiating softball, basketball and volleyball.”
